Welcome to whatever this is going to be.

Back of photographer Sam Goodman's head as he holds a Mamiya 645 film camera, showing a small ghost tattoo on his hand.

The plan for this space is pretty simple... there is no plan. This blog is going to be a catch-all for anything and everything. Expect photos from recent shoots, deep dives into camera gear, random ramblings, and whatever else is currently living in my head.

If you've spent any time looking at my work, you know I shoot a mix of film and digital. When we do a session together, I bring both. Digital obviously has its place, but film does something else entirely, and it's not just about the aesthetic. It’s about the speed. Or really, the absolute lack of it.

Shooting film forces everybody to hit the brakes. There’s no rapid-fire clicking, and there’s no screen on the back of the camera to instantly check your angles. It takes physical time to load a roll, advance the frame, and dial in the focus.

In those forced pauses, a great thing happens. People stop performing. The stiff, camera-ready posture melts away, and they actually settle into the present moment. The lack of speed strips out the nervous energy and lets the real, honest version of a person shine through.

That’s what I’m actually hunting for anyway. Not the polished, perfect pose, just the real moments.

Whether you ended up here looking for a photographer around Litchfield Park or the greater Phoenix area, you stumbled in looking for some prints, or you just want to talk shop about old cameras...

Glad you're here. More to come.
